2009-2021 The Ledge_ Suite
The Ledge_ Suite now numbers 20 works each 87X119cm inkjet prints created in a digital matrix (space) beginning in 2007. The backdrop is a readymade leather bound accounting ledger dating to 1895 that became a scrap and scribble book for my great grandmother Almina Pecor and later my grandfather Jack Bovey between 1902 and 1937. During the period they used this book to write poems, practice math and to paste printed ephemera from fibre based newspapers and chromolithographic magazines.
The late industrial aged tome, here is symbol of capitalist decay. The images and printed texts serve as a reversional backdrop linking fragments of history back to a colonialist past and forward to present concerns. In While Adrift, the plight of the world oceans is in question, in Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Curiosities) a looming cloud threatens a dark history of colonial opulence and scientific inquiry alongside childhood innocence, and in There is a tear… the book is intended to suggest the precariousness of earths state and certain vulnerability due to ecological abuse.
With these works, the digitally printed image is necessary to create a sense of hyper-reality which suggests the very present means and time of the works making, while amplifying an omnipresent sense of threat or anxiety in the worn and stained pages.
